An ammonite fossil is the preserved stone remains of an extinct, sea-dwelling mollusk, featuring a tight, spiral shell that looks like a coiled ram's horn. These creatures were 
⁠cephalopods, meaning they are related to modern octopuses, squids, and the chambered nautilus.
They first appeared about 240 to 400 million years ago and went extinct 66 million years ago during the same mass extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs.
When the animals died, their shells sank to the ocean floor, filled with sediments and minerals like calcite or pyrite, and slowly fossilized or turned into stone over millions of years.
